Ol’ English — The Game (Doctor’s Advocate)

Back in my day, even though I’m probably not qualified to say that yet (maybe on some things), shit was different. It feels like not everyone today remembers that in the mid-2000s, we didn’t have such a constant influx of new music.

Today, it feels like we’ve got 8923787 new albums a week and 537495072340 songs a day (the actual stat is 40,000 new songs uploaded to Spotify daily [or the equivalent of 2 new Chris Brown albums]). I did just do brackets inside parentheses, an aside inside an aside, Leo would be proud.

Before we had so much new music to look forward to, we would listen to the same handful albums for half the year and hoped our favorite artists dropped something new. If they didn’t, we kept listening to those same albums plus the old school shit we’ll always love. Of course, there were mixtapes, but the quality wasn’t the same. You’d find a few songs that you enjoyed and stuck to those. I think that’s why older generations are so partial to their music. There wasn’t a lot of it, so you had to appreciate what you had. How you calling albums “classics” when they ain’t been out for 24 hours, and you stopped listening after three spins?

Anyway, back to discussing the old ways. When I used to spend all my non-homework hours browsing the RapGodfathers forum, we loved talking upcoming tracklists. Every time a tracklist would drop, we’d spend hours arguing on the internet over which would be the best songs and features. When the Doctor’s Advocate one leaked, I immediately spotted what I knew would be the best song on the album: Ol’ English. I didn’t even drink 40s back then. It was this song that put me on to my first-ever Colt 45 (sorry, Afroman). I don’t know why I chose that song, I just had a feeling in my gut it would be amazing. And it was, and it is (and it always will be). This is peak Game right here. Fresh off his beef with G-Unit. Isn’t signed to Aftermath anymore and is doing whatever he wants with Geffen. We have a fantastic hook, no guest features, and Chuck being honest about his life. One thing people seem to forget about Game’s music is, despite his glorification of the gangbangin’ lifestyle, he understands the negative aspects of the world he’s chosen. And he’s not afraid to talk about those either:

Took a long chronic hit, and thought about the time

When I was 12 years old and I emptied my first clip

Hit my first switch, same night fucked my first bitch

Thought I was dreamin ’til I pinched her tits

She caught a stray bullet ridin’ shotgun in my shit

So I got her name tatted in (Old English)

If you really want to enjoy everything this song has to offer. Go to the liquor store and buy a 40 inside a brown paper bag, light one up, sit back and enjoy.
